Homeschooling Thoughts

It has been such beautiful weather here, and the kids have been loving playing in the yard-days like these make me so happy to be back in NC.

But at night-while getting the kids in bed-I especially miss having my sweet Bill around. Even though my kids are angels most of the time (like all kids), by the end of the day I am so frazzled and overcooked that I just can't wait for them to fall asleep.

However, once they are in bed, then the house is way too empty, way too quiet and way too lonely.

And I can't complain; I feel lucky that Bill still has a job, and that I can stay home with the kids, but I still wish that Bill's job didn't send him all over the place for long periods of time.

So far, we have been able to go with him a lot of the time, but what about when the kids start school? I've been thinking about that a lot lately, and wondering about homeschooling pros and cons. Homeschooling would make it so we could keep traveling with Bill, but then, it would be impossible for me to work from home and homeschool at the same time, so that would stop my income, and stop the chance of me bringing home a full time paycheck once all the kids went to school.

So anyone with any thoughts?

A friend of mine is having her oldest do cyberschool. I was a little skeptical about it at first, but after seeing everything that he is doing, I think it's great. The lessons are all outlined for them(so, you don't have to design your curriculum- which I would struggle with, even though I'm a former teacher). Some involve the parent teaching the child, some is independent work, and then there are some lessons they watch right on the computer.

So, even though you are involved, you can still get a little free time. They are also done in about 4 hours every day, so you still have time for other things.

Also, it's free here. Most of the cyberschools, anyway. It's viewed as your alternative to public school and somehow it is worked out so that your taxes go to pay for it instead.

Personally, I would not do it for kindergarten. I am a believer in public kindergarten. All those fine motor skills and learning the basics of how school works, I think is important.

But, I'm considering it for when my boys are a little older.

Sorry for the book!

Hello Michelle,
I read your blog on 'Home schooling', right now I am not a mother and I might be able to grasp how important of a matter this is for parents, but I definitely think this must be a very crucial decision to take as parents.I had not even heard of the concept of 'Home schooling' till I got to meet my American side, but if you may allow me to suggest just as a well-wisher, I would say AJ being a very social child, he would love to go out and interact with the world and make his own set of tiny friends.Of course, it is not helping now that both of you are unsure of which place to stay, but if you do,I am sure even you would want him to go out and explore.I am sure you will take a very good and sensible decision.

I think you could probably homeschool and still work. Most kids that homeschool are way more independent with their work and do it faster because they don't have to wait on other kids.

But we are struggling with the same things. Public school vs private vs homeschool. It is such a big decision that will affect the rest of their lives! ahh! good thing Sweet Pea is only 2...

I don't think it'll ever be an easy decision. Homeschooling is HARD! I don't homeschool Nicky, but I was homeschooled and I know it was hard for my Mom.

BUT, I think it was one of the best things she did for me as a child. I still dream of doing it with my kids. But I'm fighting againts my husband... so I don't know if it'll ever happen.

I say pray about it. Really, really pray and listen to God and see where he is leading you. I'm sure if he plans this for you, you'llhave peace.
